Sunday in Iowa...

Today is the last day of the season for The Dairy King in Montezuma, Iowa, population 1,435.  It's still in the mid-eighties this week.
Our Iowa senator, running for reelection, in an effort to prove he's not a creature of D.C. says he can find every Dairy Queen in Iowa...he visits all 99 counties every year.
Montezuma, although it's the county seat, may be too small for a Dairy Queen, but this little shop appears to get plenty of local business.  In most small Iowa towns, these places provide sandwiches, ice cream treats of all kinds, and summer jobs for high school kids, just like the root beer stand I car-hopped at in high school.

  2. Your state is the only one left that I need to hit! I have been to the other 49. Where should I visit? I do not know much about Iowa. I love all things rural as I am a country girl here in Texas!

    1. What I like about Iowa is that it is a state of small towns and small cities evenly distributed across the state. No one large metropolitan area defines Iowa, and the small towns are what we appreciate. We travel the two-lanes to really see the real Iowa. Roadside America Iowa gives some good ideas for seeing the "real" Iowa; we find almost any town here has something fun or nostalgic to offer, particularly the friendly people.
I spent a lot of time (high school, college, etc.) in Texas, and if you like Texas you'll like Iowa.

  3. I love seasonal Iowa ice cream shops. My family and I actually every June, in honor of National Dairy Month, visit an Iowa ice cream "destination" each week. We'll have to add "The Dairy King" to our list!

  4. Val, if you haven't been there yet, the Frosty Udder in Oskaloosa Iowa has some tasty ice cream. Also a good ice cream shop in New Sharon which isn't too far from Oskaloosa, what a fun idea for June Dairy Month.

    1. I'll add them to my list! I'm always looking for ideas and we like to do one "longer drive" spot each month.
