Sunday in Iowa
This Drive In Movie Theater In Newton Iowa is one of only four left in the state. Do you remember going to one? Maybe in your PJ's with your folks or on a Saturday night date.
Oh yes. The Sky View, and another one here in Omaha. I don't remember the second ones name. I went with my family when I was little, mom popped corn and we drank strawberry Vess pop, a local soda. I got to play in the playground. Sometimes, I got cotton candy there. When I was in high school and college, we would double date. I can't tell you the name of one movie I saw :). But I remember they usually were horror movies.
We went in our PJ's when we were small. They always had a kids show first and than we slept through whatever the folks watched. Mom popped corn also. It was costly at the consession stand. Good times1
Good golly, I wasn't aware there were any drive-in movie theaters left at all! Yes, I definitely remember going to them in the summer time with my family . . . mom, dad and brother. I can't remember if my brother and I were in our pajamas or not.
I vaguely remember going a couple of times with a date when I was a teenager, too. We were so "backward" and "slow" that we did nothing but watch the movie. Just as well, huh?
Used to go to both the Cloud and the 10-Hi in St. Cloud years ago! Fort Collins still has a drive-in--twin theaters I think, but not sure how long it will still be there. And always the mosquito coil!
I had forgotten about the mosquito coil. We took them with us camping, on a picnic, etc. Really worked and saved the little ones from Minnesota's mosquitos. Have you ever gone to the Fort Collins drive-in?
My Mom used to pop enough popcorn to fill a paper grocery bag to the top. She'd also make a 2-gallon container of Kool Aid. Ours had a playground, too. Our old Chevys were so big we were always comfortable. Wonder how it would be in today's small cars? The one we went to, in Moberly MO, is still there!
Ah, yes, Kool Aid. I made it for our kids and also popsicles out of Kool Aid. I don't remember a play ground at any of the drive-ins we went to. However our local theatre had Sat. afternoon movies for the kids. Lots of fun.
I do remember drive-ins when I was growing up in the fifties and sixties. Today we are fortunate to live 1/2 mile from the only drive in our area. People line up 2-3 hours ahead just to make sure they get in. They show first rate movies the day they open. It's still something that I look forward to.

I prefer to think we were just good kids, not "slow" LOL. I don't think the kids nowdays realize how much fun they are missing out on.

DeleteHi, Myrna! Yes, I went to the Fort Collins drive-in back in '96/'97 a couple of times.

ReplyDeleteLucky you to have such a good drive in. Showing first rate movies on opening day has to be rare.
