Chocolate Pecan Cookies from the Dessert Queen

Made these chocolate cookies for a friend of ours. He is a State Representative and will take these to Des Moines with him to munch on when he gets a break. That is if he doesn't eat them all before he gets there. This does make a smaller amount, but they are quite good and very easy to make.
Chocolate Pecan Cookies
Oven 350°       Makes 4 Dozen
4 1/2 ounces (1 cup) all purpose flour
1 cup cocoa (not Hot chocolate mix)
1/2 tsp baking soda
1/4 tsp baking powder
1/4 tsp salt
3 ounces (6 TB ) unsalted butter softened
1 ounce (2 TBS.) vegetable shortening
1/2 cup Packed brown sugar
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1 large egg
1 tsp vanilla extract
About 4 oz. (3/4 cup) chopped pecans or whatever nuts you have on hand.
Heat oven to 350°
Line cookie sheets with parchment paper or foil
In a medium mixing bowl, combine the flour, cocoa, baking soda, baking powder and salt. Mix well with a wire whisk.
With mixer, beat the butter and shortening until creamy. Add sugars and beat until well combined.
Slowly add the flour mixture just until well mixed.
Drop by heaping teaspoonfuls on baking sheets. Bake for 10 to 12 minutes. Cool on baking sheets for a few minutes and then on a rack to finish cooling
You can use salted butter if you don't have unsalted on hand.
