As a child (this must have been in the late 40s or early 50s) a special treat for our family was to go to the A&W Drive-In (waitresses came out to the car) on a summer's evening for a meal. The order was brought out to the car and placed on a tray that attached to the driver's side window. I don't think the root beer has the same wonderful flavor that it did then. How could it after having it as a young child in those (heavy!) frosted mugs? :o}
We went to International Falls when our children were in grade school (early 70's) and stopped at a A&W that still had waitresses that brought your order. They though it was so much fun and still have the mugs I bought from the A&W that day. Good root beer and the canned I can now buy sure doesn't taste the same.
Have always loved the A & W and you're right; the root beer you buy at the grocery store just isn't the same. After moving from Okla. City to Texas I sure do miss not being able to go to an A & W. Just not one in our area. Yes, there is an A&W in Fort Worth but we just don't get over that way. Enjoyed their Root Beer Floats. I want one now in fact.

Sounds good to me, they were one of our Grandma's favorite things to have on a lazy Sunday afternoon.
