When mother-daughter dresses were popular?
When most women's and children's dresses were home sewn?
When white sandals were the thing for summer dress-up?
I love this photo of Myrna, Mom and Kay in their white dresses with blue flowers and rick rack - I always got 2 hand-me-downs!
Yep, I sure do remember mother/daughter dresses! http://rozyhomemaker.blogspot.com/2016/03/saturdays-sewing.html
ReplyDeleteGosh, I haven't thought about mother-daughter dresses in eons! But I certainly do remember when they were popular. Mom and I never participated in the craze though. I don't remember having a home sewn dress as my mom worked outside the home and didn't sew except for alterations. Although she did have make a bridal dress (!) for my doll for Christmas one year. And I'm sure I went through several pairs of white summer sandals over the years.
ReplyDeleteAnd I can remember when getting my first boughten dress was a big deal. Everyone including Sue and I sewed so rarely bought ready made. I put my daughter in white sandals every summer when she was small and I still wear them, except NOT after Labor Day, remember that?
ReplyDeleteWe didn't have mother-daughter dresses, but my mother made all my knitwear and frocks and I remember she made one or two of the same fabrics for my "walkie-talkie" doll.
ReplyDeleteI was about ten when I got my first commercially-knitted cardigan, and about twelve when I got my first bought frock. I felt ever so grown-up!

I guess that would be about how old I was also. It was for Conformation in the Methodist church as we had to have white dresses. We always had store bought sweaters at least till I learned how to knit in my late teens and early twenties.
DeleteI was lucky. As firstborn I got new clothes most of the time - although I did have 3 older girl cousins & my aunt often sent boxes of their hand-me-downs to my Mom for me and later, my 2 sisters. I especially remember a beautiful sapphire blue velvet dress my aunt made for my oldest cousin's Junior prom. I used it when our high school chorus needed formal dresses for a holiday concert. Then In junior high I got very interested in sewing and until I finished college I made quite a number of shirts, skirts & dresses. I even made my white eyelet high school graduation dress. I also remember my grandmother buying me Polly Flinders smocked dresses when I was quite little - which also were passed onto my little sisters. Sure wish I had one or two of those beautiful outfits now!
