Sunday in Iowa...

Geese in a small pasture
  Our Grandmother always served goose for Christmas dinner;
 after they had replenished the household pillows with goose down

  1. In the past we traditionally had a Christmas goose on the table, too. (Never stuffed the pillows with goose down though.) But I think we've finally gotten over trying to deal with cranky geese and no longer keep them. Personally, I like the flavor of turkey much more anyway!

    1. You never, ever want to open the door to the room while they are stuffing goose down into pillows...total downy chaos. Myrna and I can testify to that!
      We got paid 50¢ apiece to round up the geese when they escaped and ran all over the neighborhood. If you keep them in a raspberry patch they will eat the weeds but not the raspberry plants, a win-win.

  2. Never had goose. But, use to buy a duck for XMAS all the time. Haven't done that in a while.

  3. I am curious about how goose tastes like. I have tasted roasted duck and I liked that.

    1. Hi Jr and Briana, I have to say that goose is one of my favorites. Since I no longer know someone who raises them I don't fix it often. The price at the stores is just too high. They are more like dark meat in chicken, moist and so good.
      Yes, Sue is right about opening doors where someone is stuffing feather pillows. Feathers and Down all over!

  4. My Dad was Czech, so goose was on the menu a lot! He also said that when he was young, in the winter, they would set around the table stripping feathers. My grandma would put the copper boiler on the table, and they would put the feather underneat. They had to work until there were enough feathers to lift up the boiler!!
