One Year Anniversary

A year ago, we started our blog - with this post.
"We live a lot like our folks did in the 40's and 50's - gardening, canning, cooking from scratch, hanging up the wash, modest square footage, fairly simple wants, sharing good books, coffee time with friends, dressing simply in sturdy basic clothing, taking a Sunday drive in the country instead of going to the mall, fishing, picnicking, etc. We don't feel like we've given up anything. Part of the secret is to live in a community where folks are like-minded, the other secret is knowing you can enjoy other people's landscaping, beautiful homes, etc., but you don't have to OWN everything you see. Simple wants cut down on costs, maintenance, storage, care, clutter and let you sleep at night.  I don't want to be a pioneer - but we could certainly live simpler, more fulfilling lives."
We've had a lot of fun, sharing the planning and work that goes into an effort like this.  Myrna didn't think she wanted to contribute more than a dessert recipe occasionally; you can see she changed her mind, thank heavens!
Thanks to all of our readers for the comments and fellowship, and our families for their forbearance - being the guinea pigs and waiting while their dinner is photographed!

  4. Congratulations, Sue and Myrna! I have thoroughly enjoyed your blog, trying different recipes, and learning new tips. Because of your blog, I bought a food scale and now weigh my dry ingredients. :::smile::: I look forward to reading your blog for years to come.

  5. I looked to see if there was a way to email you, but I couldn't find one. My son has asked me to make him a Crumb Cake for his birthday this week. Do you have a favorite recipe?

I am not sure about Sue, but I must confess the Crumb Cake I make is the one on the box of Bisquick. That is the one our Mom made also. Might be why I like it.

I make this overnight coffee cake, that is similar to the one on the Bisquick box.

  12. well, congratulations with all the blogs/posts you have posted since. As I am reading new to old or top to bottom, I enjoy how much Americans and Dutch were/are the same and differ. As to the way you choose to live: one can admire a Rolls Royce and the realise her own Ford Fiesta of 8 years old brings her safely and quietly everywhere she chooses, no need for the RR. Also, I am a short person, wearing hiptrousers like ordinary ones and having trouble finding the right ones, 3/4 length legs and all. Guess what, bearly unworn ones at the thriftstores, I count my blessings as they come. And from scratch is almost all my cooling and baking, no use for all kinds of mixes and packaging, I buy once a new-to-me cake or meal, do I like it, I copy from scratch, otherwise I will never make it. My husband does not eat meat, he only likes traditional meals, but he loves cheesetosti's, He also likes a "broodje gezond" white bun, icelettuce, tomatoe, cheese and hardboiled egg. I hate it, I.d rather eat a Mac, of which I feed the buns to the birds, the meat to the dog. But I like a steak-salad.sandwich. I guess it is the cheese/hardboiled egg combination I hate so much/Yhank you for all your recipes, I will cook/bake many of them. Reina
