Do You Remember...?

Seeing wash on lines this summer in our neighborhood and in the countryside reminds me of growing up.  Interesting how those clotheslines are coming back into fashion.
Are you old enough to remember any of these machines?
The Bendix ad is from 1947.  Our mom had one of these very first front loading automatic washing machines maybe in the early fifties.  Before that she had a wringer washer that I don't remember.
However, our grandmother used a wringer washer until the sixties.  Myrna had a wringer washer when she lived in the country with spring-fed water so the pump could keep up.
I never used a dryer until after I married and returned to the states from Germany where I had a washer that had a water heater right in it!
Of course, Maytag started in Newton, Iowa, not far from us – and Amana is still in Amana, Iowa today.

1911- Whirlpool Corporation started as the Uptown Machine Company, founded in St. Joseph, Michigan to produce electric-motor driven wringer washers

1922- Maytag Corporation began producing agitator washing machine

1930’s - revolutionary Bendix front load machines – actually years ahead of the times

1947  - first top loading automatic machines

  1. After clothes were washed in a wringer washer my mother had two big tubs of cold water to rinse the clothing. My job was to pick the clothes out and run them thru the wringer and then on to the next tub for more rinsing. Took all day as there were six of us kids and she could only wash one day a week.

  2. My daughter has been using a clothes line lately. I wish I had room for one. Well, I do, but not in a place that would look right. The right place for it is where the garden is. I would rather have the garden!

I have one of those Maytags on my back porch. It even works. My husband brought it home for me. I was going to use it for flowers but since it works, I hate to ruin it. I have it on the back porch because that is where my grandmother kept hers. I will most likely find a new home for it soon. I don't really need it but it is fun to have!
