Never enough thyme in the garden...

Left to right:  Curly Parsley, French Thyme, Rosemary
These are probably my last 2012 garden photos- we had a light frost last Saturday night, and then another almost as cold night Sunday.  We still have a few tomatoes and peppers that we hope will ripen before we get a killing frost.  We overwinter chives and sage plants right in their pots outside close to the house - but I brought in these herbs that are more tender, parsley, French thyme, and rosemary, to winter in my kitchen basking in the Western sun.  I'd like to be able to put the thyme and rosemary out again next spring.  The parsley is a biannual, and will seed out next year.
We especially like these plant dollies by Fiskars, that are fairly sturdy, and hold a couple quarts of water if necessary.  I don't know if they would hold up outside, but they work well here, letting the herbs follow the sun.  These are about 3 gallon pots.  We washed our pots and saucers off well, and also hosed off the plants, hoping not to bring in any critters with them.
Today I plan to cut some sage to dry, and make more parsley and chive butter to freeze from the plants still outside.  We also harvested the last of our sweet peppers for the freezer - some cut for stir fries and some chopped.
For now, we are enjoying the fragrance of these herbs - they'll remind us of summer all winter long

  1. I love having fresh herbs on my windowsill but lately, have had to give up because of tiny little fly type creatures which seem to live in the compost despite it being new. Drives me mad.

    1. We're southeast of Des Moines...I don't know if you're ever ready for frost!
Most of our garden is done, however, I bring our tender herbs inside.
