Sunday in Iowa

We visited the Amana Colonies, seven German villages with a rich history and array of shops featuring many handcrafted skills, a great museum and restaurants last weekend and we couldn't leave until we stopped at the fabulous quilt shop there.  Heritage Designs Quilting and Needlework is in a big Amana-style barn building, and the interior displays literally go to the ceiling!
It's in an 1895 Amana granary, renovated to preserve the building’s original architecture.
In 2009 Heritage Designs was selected as a Top 10 Quilt Shop by Quilt Sampler magazine and appeared in the Spring/Summer 2009 issue.  Their website says they stock 3500 bolts of fabric, and I know it's a lot!  If I want really good-quality, beautiful fabrics for a project, this is where I go!  They courteously let me take photos inside - there is everything you ever wanted for quilting and needlework; many kits are made up and on display, and the tools and goodies for sewers make it hard to leave.  Click on the photo to see more detail.
Great restaurants, antiques, this terrific shop for sewers, and The Kitchen Sink kitchen shop - my idea of a great way to spend our wedding anniversary day - and my husband seemed to enjoy it too.
