Southern Living has a tendency to use “ultimate” a lot…describing recipes, cookbooks, etc., but The Ultimate Southern Living Cookbook published in 1999 may actually live up to that description. It’s almost 500 pages of great recipes, in 16 chapters, lots of step-by-step photos and charts and tips, along with a nice menu index.
This is an up-to-date, heavily illustrated, encyclopedic cookbook for newcomers and experienced cooks who want to try something else. When I want to replicate something I enjoyed when I lived, went to school and worked in kitchens in Texas and Georgia, I always look for a recipe in Southern Living, and this book isn’t a disappointment. If you can find a used copy of this book you won’t be sorry – Myrna and I almost didn’t know when to quit…we made quite a few recipes for the blog and we just scratched the surface.
