Cookbook Reviews...Everyday Food

Everyday food was a magazine all of us liked around here.  We liked the columns that include kitchen skills, using a seasonal food several ways, and one that introduces an ingredient that may be new to you.  I also thought the section that gives both a shopping list and 5 days’ worth of easy meals was a good idea.  The 2012 issues actually had the shopping list on a card you can tear out and take to the store.
The April 2012 issue was a How-to Issue, and it caught both Myrna’s and my eye.  The salmon on the cover did it for me, along with several recipes for asparagus, and the “ultimate cake recipe” that claimed it was the only recipe you will ever need – that a boxed mix just can’t compare, challenged Myrna.  This particular issue also had Easter recipes, and a foolproof method for cream soups – which I think are an excellent way to use up leftover odds and ends of produce,
I used to pass these magazines on to either my daughter-in-law or sister-in-law – but I started to save them because I may want to try something else.  And in a 5 x 7” format, they are easy to take right into the kitchen, and easy to find a place  to save them.
Sadly, the December 2012 issue is the last stand-alone issue of Everyday food, but five of 2013 Martha Stewart Living issues will come with an Everyday Food supplement.  That's hardly enough Everyday Food for us...but we're hoping we will like the supplement.  Some recipes we tried from this issue are:

Roasted Salmon with Butter From Mark Bittman

Sautéed Asparagus With Bacon

Classic Yellow Cake

Steamed Asparagus with Brown Butter and Hazelnuts
