I absolutely love my Breville toaster oven…and I finally
convinced Myrna it was a solution for baking for singles, couples or a smaller family…small
casseroles, regular pies, cakes, breads, rolls, small roasts, baking fish,
chicken, vegetables…it does it all, plus broiling, roasting, toasting bread or
bagels, baking pizza better than my big oven, warming plates and keeping food
warm…it just does it all.
I like my oven so much, my husband finally persuaded me that we could get a new one...I've had mine close to 10 years. I purchased the Breville Smart Oven Air with a 20% off coupon...they are pricey. The only caveat on this model is that it needs 6 inches of clearance between it and an overhead cabinet so you need at least 18 inches or so.
However, the Air model can also air-fry, slow cook, dehydrate and even proof bread dough! It's also large enough to bake a regular loaf of yeast bread and hold a 5 quart Dutch oven for slow cooking. Myrna likes the slow cooking feature in hers...I haven't tried mine for that yet. I had given away my slow cooker and dehydrator because I didn't have room for them in our smaller place, so this way I can use those recipes again in just one appliance.

It really can use all of my bread pans, it has an excellent
12” pizza pan and broiler pan with rack included, and quarter-sheet pans, cake pans without big handles, pie plates and one of my Nordic
Ware cookie sheets all work. As you can see, I buy racks for all my baking pans...never know when you might want to use them for cooking meat, to catch frosting drips, or to put your finished baked goods on to cool.
The only pans I purchased were an extra 6 cup muffin pan,
and a 12 cup mini muffin pan, and the small roast pan and gold-finish pans. The 10 x 7” roast pan and rack are from
Chicago Metallic, and holds a half 13x9” recipe of bars too, good even for your regular oven. The toaster oven pan set is from Nordic Ware,
and I gave Myrna the sheet pan with the rack that I purchased separately that
she says she uses all the time. The
cookie sheet and quarter sheet pan and rack are also from Nordic ware and the
bread pan is 4”x10”, and works as do my 8 ½ x 4 ½” and 5 x 9” loaf pans.
I have a number of smaller casserole dishes that fit too…I didn’t
buy any special ones, but we certainly bake many dishes in them in the toaster
oven.
I love that I can preheat the oven and bake a pan of muffins
or biscuits before my large oven would even be preheated in the same oven that toasts beautifully.
I just upgrade my toaster oven....I couldn't swing a Breville right now. This one will hold regular size plans that the last one wouldn't. Since I'm alone now and money is thinner, I've been watching how much I used the oven..its over 30 years old. Now that we have smart meters for electricity, I could actually see online when the oven was used and how much extra electricity. I'm not sure I can bake a regular loaf of bread in the new one, but I think it will be handy for many other things. I'm going to make a small pan of brownies tomorrow when the new oven shows up. I wouldn't turn the old one on for just that little bit.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you on turning the oven on for just a little bit. I had almost quit fixing baked potatoes which are my favorite as even three are a waste of oven heat. I am really enjoying mine and you could try a loaf of bread in yours
Deleteif the pan fits with some clearance. Watch and cover it with foil if it gets too brown. Good luck and have fun with it.
I think I would like to get one of these, now that I am just cooking for myself. May I inquire as to where you bought yours and how did you find a 20% off coupon for it?
ReplyDeleteI bought it at Bed, Bath and Beyond with one of their frequent 20% coupons. It was the same price everywhere I looked.
DeleteIf you are cooking for just one or two, one of these ovens really helps you keep on cooking and eating like you should.
Thanks! I have been relying on prepared foods and easily prepared foods since my husband passed in May, and have been trying to get the desire to cook better foods for myself. The big oven takes so long to heat up and seems just so wasteful to cook one or two chicken breasts in there. I thank you for all your information and will begin a search for one! (And one of those elusive coupons!)
ReplyDeleteWe understand, Myrna is in your same situation now.
DeleteCheck the bottom of their website to sign up for online offers...they usually send you a coupon pretty quickly.
I just wanted to come back and say that I did indeed buy one of these ovens at Bed Bath and Beyond, AND used a 20% off coupon! An $80 savings! That's nothing to sneeze at! I have baked chicken, potatoes, and dehydrated strawberries in it already! Thanks very much for the heads up on this great machine!
DeleteGood for you...I like the air fry feature too...plan to dehydrate apple slices with cinnamon-sgar this week!
DeleteSo glad you like your new Breville Wendy, I think they are so good when you are just cooking for one or two. I bake pies in mine and it works fine. I find that I fix something to eat as I don't need to turn the large oven on. I hope that is the case with you.
DeleteI have an Oster countertop oven and use mine all the time! I have baked bread in mine and did as Myrna suggested: just place foil over the top of the bread if it starts to get to brown. My sister also bought one because she liked mine! I just love the thrill of the hunt to find smaller pans that will fit in my oven!
ReplyDeleteI bought a young friend an Oster oven when he got divorced and he uses it a lot. I do thank Sue often for nagging at me till I bought the Breville I have now. There are some good buys on smaller pans this time of the year as kids go back to collage.
DeleteThank you for sharing about your Breville toaster oven. I have been on the fence about replacing ours - it is a GE toaster/broiler oven that we got as a wedding gift over three decades ago and it still works great. But I know the new ones are multi function and so much more energy efficient. Still hard to let go of an old friend... Our toaster is one my parents got for a wedding gift and it is the best - sometimes old things are just better... But I think a new Breville oven is in my future soon!
ReplyDeleteIf you like your GE oven now you will be surprised at how much more efficient and multi tasked they have become.
DeleteI don't use it for toast as I can't have bread but sure use it for something almost every day. I must say after talking with folks who have other brands I am glad I did go with the Breville even though it is pricey. I know I have saved on energy use and it shuts it self off when the timer runs down. That alone is really a saving of food and electric usage.
Once my husband and I become true empty nesters, a Breville oven is on my list, due to all the reasons you listed, Sue.
ReplyDeleteI am stunned to hear that your oven has an air-fry function!! Does it work well?
I had never used one before so I don't have a comparison, but reviews I have read were actually good compared to stand-alone models. It does get foods very nice and crispy!
DeleteI love the dough proofing-perfect.
I want to try dehydrating next.
