This is a primitive antique pump that uses a chain with little cups spaced along it to draw up water. You don't usually see antiques like this one in such good shape; I wouldn't be surprised if it doesn't have a working chain anymore.

How unique. The only rain chains that I use now are hung from my gutters as a water feature when it rains.
