Sundays in Iowa...Michelle's Hollyhocks

A flower garden with old-fashioned hollyhocks,  coneflowers and daylilies
In my daughter-in-law, Michelle's, homestead yard
These take Myrna and me back to our childhood; our dad always raised hollyhocks this color

  2. Your hollyhocks and coneflowers are beautiful. I love the color of the hollyhocks. I have never grown thollyhocks. Do you know if they must be started from seed or can the plants be bought at a plant seller.

    1. It's best that you start hollyhocks from seed

    2. They are usually easy to start from seed and reseed if you leave the stalks alone...I don't remember planting them as a kid, they came up by themselves.

  3. beautiful, I started some from seeds, they didn't take very well and grew ( those that sprouted) slowly. I planted them and will try again next year earlier with the seeds.

  4. Hollyhocks take me back as well! To my grandparents' farm yard. Now whenever I see them in our area, I make a point to drive my mom by. She remembers when she and hes sisters made dolls from the flowers. Thanks for sharing!

    1. Yes, I thought my dolls were ballerinas because the flower looked like a dance skirt.

  6. My mom had a variety of hollyhock colors. I still have hollyhock seeds that where collected from hers.
Those that didn't know this; when planting hollyhocks from seed they will not bloom till the 3rd year of planting. The first 2 years they just concentrate of growing.
Hollyhocks Do Not transplant well so make sure you plant your seeds where you want them to begin with.

  7. Spectacular! Hollyhocks seem to do well here in SoCal, but can be prone to rust. Coneflowers are hit and miss here; sometimes yes, sometimes no. Daylilies like SoCal.
Beautiful pic of a lovely garden
