The town has served as the county seat since August 1845, even though it was not incorporated until July 1859.

The country in this vicinity seemed to early settlers to bear a great likeness to the plains of Marengo in Italy, where Napoleon Bonaparte defeated the Austrians in the spring of 1800.
Love the looks of them old buildings; especially them arched windows, along with all the other little details.
ReplyDeleteWe once lived outside of Marengo, Illinois. Now I wish I knew more about the history of that town. I don't know if it had a connection to Marengo in Italy or not!
