A gourd tree!
This is a tree growing on the grounds of the Penn Central Shopping Mall in Oskaloosa, Iowa
The long light green appendages are lagenaria gourds growing on vines planted next to the tree and trained to grow in the tree for support. The seeds came from Africa, a gift to a retired local nursery owner who now takes care of the landscaping for the mall and the mall's owners, Musco Lighting of Oskaloosa. She has been growing them there for several years, this is the best they have looked in any year yet.
