I bought the 5# limit, and had them wrapped 1 per package at the meat counter at our local Fareway. This grocery store chain doesn’t have pre-wrapped fresh meat, the butcher wraps it for you in freezer wrap with a heavy plastic inner layer at the meat counter, any way you want them wrapped. Another savings, as you don't have to rewrap them when you get home.
I came home with 6 chops, weighing between ¾ and 1 pound each. We will split them after they are cooked as a 6-8 ounce portion less the bone is enough for one person our age.
Some delicious meat for Sunday meals waiting in the freezer for a total cost of $5.12. There is no tax on unprepared food ingredients in Iowa. The meat counter was busy in the middle of Thursday morning...most were buying the chops on sale.
Here are some of the recipes I have in mind…I haven’t made them for a while. I may have to cook them a little longer because of the thickness disparity…that’s what an instant-read thermometer is great for.
The USDA says “Cook pork, roasts, and chops to 145 ºF as measured with a food thermometer before removing meat from the heat source, with a three-minute rest time before carving or consuming.”
I have to package ours in larger packs for my meat-a-tarian. We have a vacuum sealer. Best purchase ever for the freezer.
