Carrying the goodies to the church or school picnic?
Dinner ‘on the grounds’…eating a pot-luck dinner outside at church?
Those pans of fried chicken, bowls of potato salad, cole slaw, sliced garden tomatoes?
Pans of sheet cake and pies? Chocolate marble cake with 7 minute frosting?
Eating the leftovers and starting a fire to roast weenies and marshmallows in the evening?
A summer rain shower breaking up the party?
I remember. Good times.
ReplyDeleteYes, Picnics were a favorite of our Mom and Dad always went along with her wishes on that. Lots of fond Memories.
DeleteNo church picnics, but that is what our family reunions were like. The families would all chip together and buy hundreds of hamburgers, brats, and hot dogs which were grilled and heaped in big Nesco roasters. Lunch and the reunion officially started at noon, and food was served all afternoon.
ReplyDeleteMom would make a hot dish to share, usually a big crock pot of her special baked beans or her incredible German potato salad. She'd also make a pan of bars. There would be so many long tables set up with so much amazing food--the hot dishes, plus endless varieties of cold summer salads & big bowls of fruit salads and jello salads.
And oh, those dessert tables! We kids knew we had died and gone to heaven, what with all those homemade cookies, bars, tortes, and sheet cakes (never layer cakes--those were too fussy for those busy women!).
Such good memories. Why do so many of them relate back to food? I suppose because good food is love...the offering and the receiving.
My husband's family reunion is next week...nothing has changed...lots of food and visiting...it's a BIG family!
DeleteHowever, we have it at a community center with a kitchen the last couple of years...but with a play yardfor the many kids.
Yes Sue, I do think food is and always was the way our Parents and Families than and now use to show love or Friendship. Your Reunions sound like they were so much fun.
